

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navanitheme Pillay,
congratulated Morocco on its constitutional reforms, recently announced
by His Majesty the King of Morocco.
In a letter to Morocco's Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, H.E. Mr Omar
Hilale, Ms Pillay "welcomed the recent initiatives taken by HIs Majesty,
King Mohammed VI to reinforce the country's institutions and the
Kingdom's democratic principles".
She "noted the royal initiative concerning the revision of the
Constitution and the strengthening of the independence of the judiciary,
the parliament and the political parties, as well as the consolidation
of the separation of powers." Ms Pillay further highlighted her
"interest in the measures taken to recognise the diversity of Moroccan
identity, including the Amazighe aspect, and the strengthening of
guarantees for individual and collective rights".
In addition, Ms Pillay "welcomed the establishment of the National
Council for Human Rights on 3 March 2011, whose independence would
enable it to continue its vital work begun by its predecessor, the
Consultative Committee for Human Rights, and to strengthen the protect
and promotion of human rights in Morocco."
She assured the Ambassador that "her team would continue to work closely
with the National Council for Human Rights, as it had in the past with
the Consultative Committee for Human Rights".
